(Environmental Awareness) Government and NGOs Role for Protection 

Pakistan’s attempt to raise the living standards of its citizen has meant that economic development has largely taken precedence over environmental issues.

Unchecked use of hazardous chemicals, vehicle emissions, and industrial activity has contributed to a number of environmental and health hazards, chief among them being water pollution. 

Much of the country suffers from a lack of potable water due to industrial waste and agricultural runoff that contaminates drinking water supplies.

 Poverty and high population growth have aggravated, and to a certain extent, caused, these environmental problems.

Although Pakistan is renowned for its mountain ranges and areas of untouched wilderness, the country passed legislation to protect its environment only in the past 10 years.

Air pollution problems in Pakistan

In the cities, widespread use of low-quality fuel, combined with a dynamic expansion in the number of vehicles on Pakistani roads, has led to significant air pollution problems. 

Although Pakistan’s energy consumption is still low by world standards, lead and carbon emissions are major air pollutants in urban centers such as Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad.

Government of Pakistan through Environmental Protection Agency and by the help of various NGOs is promoting environmental awareness in public. 

Awareness and Objectives

· To enhance awareness among the masses in respect of the environmental and protection of nature.

· To set up and mange with community participation institutions for the protection of environment and nature.

· To arrange workshops, seminars, symposia and meetings to motivate people for the human development particularly the youth in respect of environment.

· To promote activities to educate the masses about the diseases due to pollution and environmental disaster and take practical steps for their eradication.

· To undertake activities and programs for the promotion of environmental health and protection of nature in new generation.

· To work for the solutions of environment based issues and create awareness among the masses about civic conditions and environmental health.

· To do all such other things and take measures which are necessary for the attainment and furtherance of the said objectives.
